Are Graduation Gift Registries Latest Hot Retail Trend?

They’re on the rise for all celebrations in life, including graduations, anniversaries and birthdays.

For years, registries were limited to weddings and showers. Now, retailers are fully immersed in “celebration” registries, a trend featured in a recent article on The Detroit News’ website.

For example, graduation gift registries have enabled retailers to capitalize on back-to-school shopping, the second biggest shopping season next to the holidays.

Graduation registries are more than wish lists for students. They often include a list of practical items necessary for making the transition from home to college.

One online company that sells dorm supplies told The Detroit News that graduation gift registries have been a hit with customers ever since the feature started in 2010. Each year, the retailer sees an increase in graduation registries.

Another retailer highlights the convenience of graduation gift registries. Just buy the grad what they need and the retailer will ship it to the dorm.

This is really innovative thinking from retailers and it’s increasing their market share. In the U.S., people typically don’t stay in their hometown for college; they move away. That makes it tough to shop for people.

These retailers are thinking outside the box. People are so busy these days. With a registry, you can go online, click three buttons, have it shipped and be done in a matter of minutes.
